La Romana province was created on September 14th, 1944, entering in use on January 1st, 1845. Law 440 from March 9th, 1956 changed its the name to La Altagracia and on January 26th 1961 the name La Romana was recovered m. Its name is the one of the provincial capital. There is territorial surface of 653, 95 km ². It limits at the north with Seibo province, at the east with La Altagracia province, at the south with the Caribbean Sea and at the west with San Pedro de Macorís Province. This province is part of Region VIII - Yuma; with a population of 219.812 people: 107.264 are men and 112.548 are women. The municipalities are: - La Romana, principal municipality. - Guaymate - Villa Hermosa. Municipal district: Cumayasa. In this province there are no very outstanding mountains. As main rivers you can find Cumayasa River, the Roman (or Dulce River) and Chavón River. The main farming activity is sugar cane production, followed by of the bovine cattle ranch, to produce milk as well as meat. In relation to industries, the main one is the sugar production. There is a strong tourist activity, especially in Saona Island. La Romana City, Altos de Chavon, Catalina Island and Cumayasa are other cities in this geography.
