Santiago, was created in 1844 (it is one of the provinces created by the first Dominican Constitution). It takes the name of the provincial capital; with a surface of 2.836,51 square kilometer. It limits at the north with Puerto Plata Province, at the East with Espaillat and La Vega Provinces, at the South with San Juan Province and at the west with Santiago Rodriguez and Valverde Provinces. It is part of Region I - North Cibao, with a population of 908.250 people: 448.791 men and 459.459 women. The municipalities are: - Santiago de los Caballeros, principal municipality. - Jánico, Licey al Medio - Tamboril - San José de las Matas - Villa Bisonó (Navarrete) - Villa González. The municipal districts: - Baitoa, Hato del Yaque, La Canela, Pedro García, Sabana Iglesia, San Francisco de Jacagua, El Caimito, Juncalito, Las Palomas, El Rubio, La Cuesta, Las Placetas, El Limón and Palmar Arriba. The mountains: Samba Mountain range starts at the southwest of Santiago City. Small hills that separate the Western Cibao Valley from Vega Real Valley are at the West. The highest mountain of the province is La Pelona, which is shared with San Juan Province. The main river is the Yaque del Norte, with its important affluents like the Beam, Amine and others. Another river that crosses in part this province is Licey River. It is a province with an important economic diversity. The industries, of all types are concentrated in Santiago de los Caballeros (and Tamboril), although tobacco industry in Villa González is also important. As far as the cattle one, the principal development is shown by the poultry keeping and pig raisings, both in Liceyal Medio. The cattle is developed mainly in the mountainous regions of the South of the province. The main agricultural products are coffee (in mountains), banana and yucca in Licey al Medio and sorrounding regions, tobacco, rice, fruit trees and horticolas in the Northwest Line (at the West of Santiago de los Caballeros). Only the national tourism is important in the province, being the most important center Santiago de los Caballeros with its neighboring mountainous regions.
