San Cristóbal Province was created on November 11th, 1932 with the name of Trujillos. It was not until November 29th, 1961 that they began to call this province as San Cristóbal. It has a territorial surface of 1265, 77 Km2. San Cristobal Province has limits at the North with Monseñor Nouel, at the northwest with Monte Plata, at the East with Santo Domingo, at the West with Peravia and San Jose de Ocoa Provinces and at the South with the Caribbean Sea. Its population until 2002 was 532,880 people. 266,120 men and, 266,760 women .The population density is 421 inhabitants per square kliometer. Main cities: Principal Municipality: San Cristóbal, with 220,767 inhabitants. Other municipalities: Bajos de Haina, Cambita Garabita, Los Cacaos, Sabana Grande de Palenque, San Gregorio de Nigua, Villa Altagracia and Yaguate. Municipal districts: Hato Damas, El Carril, Combita El pueblecito, La cuchilla, Medina and San José del Puerto. In this province there are some mountainous regions like the part of the Central Mountain Range at the North and West occupying great part of the province. Yamasa Mountain range borders on Monte Plata Province and other small elevations like Duveaux Hills at the South. Their main rivers are Haina River which is at the Eastern part of the province, the Nizao River as wells the Nigua River. There are others like Mana River, Yubaso River, La Toma River and the streams: Itabo, Saingua and Najayo. Industry, agriculture (mainly citruses and coffee crops in mountains) and the harbor activities are the most important in the province. This province is characterized mainly by an outstanding national tourist activity. Najayo and Palenque Beaches, a bath-center in La Toma as well as Haina and Nizao Rivers are the most outstanding tourist attractions of the province.
