Valverde province was created on March 27th, 1958. Its name honors General Jose Desiderio Valverde. It has a territorial surface of 823, 38 km2. It limits at the North with Puerto Plata Province, at the East and at the South with Santiago Province, at the West with Monte Cristo and at the Southwest Santiago Rodriguez province. It has a population of 158,293 people, from the total population 81,647 are men and 76,646 are women. Its population density is 192 inhabitants per square kilometer. Principal municipality: Mao with 49,475 inhabitants. Other Municipalities: Esperanza y Laguna Salada. Municipal districts: Ámina, Guatapanal, Jaibón-Pueblo Nuevo, Boca de Mao, Jicomé, Maizal, Cruce de Guayacanes, Jaibón and La Caya. There are small hills that belong to Samba Mountain Range. There are two rivers in this province. One of them is Yaque del Norte River and the other is Mao River. The most important economic activity is agriculture, producing banana, Guinean, rice and horticulture, but also bovine cattle ranch (milk and meat) goat.
